Early February, Gov. Malloy announced his plans to fund the special transportation fund (STF) through implementing tolls, increasing the gasoline tax by 7cpg, creating a new $3 tax on each tire sod in Connecticut, and accelerating a previously approved sales tax on new cars. The state budget office expects that the STF will start to run a deficit by the end of the summer and will be defunct within a few years. If approved, the state gas excise tax would increase by 2cpg on July 1st of this year, 1cpg in 2019, 2cpg in 2020 and an additional 2cpg in 2021 for a total of 7cpg over a four year period. This is a real threat.
